An eastern Michigan county fleet manager has left his position to join Current Motor Co., a nearby startup that produces electric motorcycles.

Bob Mossing, fleet manager for Washtenaw County and business manager for the sheriff's office, will resign Friday. He starts work as vice president of fleet sales with the Ann Arbor-based company on March 3.

Mossing has been in fleet management for 13 years — six years in corporate and seven in government. At Washtenaw County, Mossing saved $500,000 per year in employee and facility costs by eliminating maintenance operations and implementing a fleet management program similar to those used by corporate fleets.

He also recently put a Chevrolet Volt into the county police fleet to test the feasibility of using an electric vehicle. He said the sheriff’s office is also testing other technology such as tablets instead of laptops and a hand-held light and siren controller to save space in smaller police vehicles. He was also nominated for the 2011 Fleet Manager of the Year award.

The County named Edward Holley as interim fleet manager and will be posting the position on its website.
