The New York Police Department's next-gen patrol vehicle brings a litany of high-tech tools to the patrol assignment, including a main console displaying a video feed, surveillance camera that can send a live feed to headquarters, radiation detector, and infrared monitors.

The high-tech tools were outlined in a long-term strategic plan known as NYPD2020 presented to Commissioner Ray Kelly in November by consultant McKinsey & Co., reports the Wall Street Journal.

McKinsey's 13-page report includes 260 recommendations, including a "smart car" prototype that has been patroling the 84th Precinct in Brooklyn Heights. The prototype is a Ford Police Interceptor sedan.
