The Glen Cove, N.Y., City Council has approved installing GPS transmitters on its 250 city vehicles to ensure they are used only for official business.

The council awarded a contract Monday for Movin' On Sounds and Security to install the vehicle tracking devices for $73,750, or up to $295 per vehicle, reports Newsday.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi had been pushing for the transmitters and tested one out with his city sport-utility vehicle. The system will track mileage and the need for routing preventative maintenance.
