John Scharffbillig, director of Public Works Fleet Services for the City of Minneapolis, was recently honored with the Community Lung Health Champion Award by the American Lung Association in Minnesota.

According to the association, Minneapolis was an early adopter of E-85 fuel and flex-fuel vehicles, installing its first E-85 dispenser in 2006. The City has powered City fire engines, snow plows, and other heavy-duty engines with biodiesel for years. The fleet now also boasts its first all-electric vehicle, as well as fuel efficient hybrid electric vehicles. According to a recent report, Minneapolis reduced its gasoline consumption by 14% from 2009 to 2012 and has reduced fleet-related greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10% in just three years.

Minneapolis implemented a Green Fleet Policy in 2011. Learn how Scharffbillig and the team drafted and completed the policy here.
