The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has reduced the number of vehicles assigned to department staff by 30% and improved how it manages vehicle use by staff, resulting in $4 million in savings on mileage reimbursements.

PennDOT stated it assigned vehicles to employees who regularly logged the highest number of business miles each year and took away vehicle assignments from others, resulting in 30-percent drop in the number of sedans and SUVs PennDOT uses. The organization said it conducts monthly reviews of assigned- and pool-vehicle logs.

PennDOT has a fleet of 1,500 passenger vehicle. In 2003, the fleet was more than 2,100 vehicles. Beyond passenger vehicles, PennDOT operates a total of 8,000 pieces of rolling stock.
