The City of Springfield, Ill., is considering converting a factory into a centralized fleet maintenance garage. City officials want to borrow $1.3 million for the project, according to the State Journal-Register.

The City originally considered expanding one of its garages, but officials decided it would be more costly to expand the old facility than to construct a new one. The City would make annual payments with the money saved through the consolidation, the newspaper reports.

An assessment by CST Fleet Services recommended the City centralize its four fleets into one and hire a fleet manager. The City hired Mike Palazzolo as its first fleet manager in August 2012.
