2012 LA Auto Show Design Challenge - Police

BMW Group DesignworksUSA. The BMW Group’s E-Patrol (Human-Drone Pursuit Vehicle) is designed for a future Los Angeles, predicted to have more traffic, faster vehicles, and vehicles with alternative fuel sources. The design centered on a modular structure and drone technology. The main structure can deploy three drones. In the case of a pursuit during heavy traffic areas, the patrol officer sitting in the main structure can deploy either the flying drone or one of the single wheel drones to chase the suspect and report back data to the main structure.

The 2012 LA Auto Show's Design Challenge, now in its 9th year, was themed Law Enforcement in 2025. Six design studios designed highway patrol vehicles to meet "the challenges of a specific region’s transportation and societal conditions in 2025.” Entries were judged by Tom Matano, School of Industrial Design at San Francisco's Academy of Art University; Imre Molnar, Detroit College of Creative Studies; Stewart Reed, Pasadena Art Center College of Design; and Bruce Meyer, California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation. Subaru's SHARC won the challenge. For more information, visit The Police Car of the Future is a Subaru.

Fleet Is Not an Island Unto Itself

By Mike Antich
A successful fleet operation is not an island unto itself. Yet, this is how some fleet managers view their operation – an island surrounded by a sea of unreasonable user groups. We will all agree this is the wrong mindset and that fleet operations must be closely aligned with user departments. However, the reality is that interdepartmental friction is an unfortunate fact of life, especially territorial issues that result in emotional defiance not open to discussion or compromise.
