The Wichita (Kan.) Police Department has relaunched its motor unit after a 15-year hiatus, purchasing eight Harley-Davidson motorcycles and putting seven into service in February. The motor units will join the centralized traffic unit as part of the city’s effort to decrease vehicle crashes and fatalities.
The Police Department received a $300,000 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Kansas Department of Transportation. The grant required the purchase of U.S.-made motorcycles.
In 2003, the Kansas PD decentralized its traffic unit. It chose to reverse this decision after seeing an increase in traffic crashes. The PD plans to add more motorcycles to its motor unit in the future.
