The Toledo Police Department expects to save about $200,000 on vehicles and officer training by disbanding its motorcycle unit. Officers from the motorcycle unit will be reassigned to field operations and the traffic unit, reports the Toledo Blade.

Safety and cost were driving factors in the decision. Motorcycle officers are not permitted to engage in pursuits, and are more likely to suffer serious injury in the event of an accident. In addition, all 10 of the agency’s motorcycles were due for replacement, and replacements would cost $18,000 per motorcycle, including trade-in.
