The Rigby Police Department in Idaho is paying tribute to law enforcement history with its new vehicle design, which incorporates a checker-patterned strip down the middle of its silver Ford Interceptor Sedans.

According to the Rigby Police Department Facebook page, Police Chief Sam Tower is a history buff, and wanted to integrate modern and classic aspects of law enforcement into the new design. Today, the checker pattern is often associated with taxi cabs, but the design originated in police agencies. The Chicago Police Department and Pittsburgh Police Department, for example, include the checker pattern on their hats and signage.

The design is being implemented as old cars are replaced and new cars and rotated into service.
