City officials in Tuscaloosa, Ala., are discussing plans to use red light revenue to bolster its police fleet, reports Tuscaloosa News.

The city has collected $1.54 million since red light cameras were implemented in 2013. The red light funds would be combined with $624,000 in police department savings to go toward purchasing 46 new police vehicles.

The $2.16 million total will be used to purchase 27 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol units, 11 administrative support vehicles, three Harley-Davidson motorcycles for the department's traffic enforcement, and five investigator vehicles.

Over the past five years, the city council has kept a 37% replacement rate of the police department's fleet, authorizing the replacement of 91 out of 244 vehicles.
