The State of New York approved the purchase of a used Sikorsky S76D — at a cost of $12.5M — to join the State Police fleet. The helicopter will also be available to transport N.Y. Governor Andrew Cuomo when needed, reports lohud.com.

The agency previously requested the helicopter in November, but the request was rejected by the state comptroller. The request was allowed to move ahead in January, after the helicopter cabin carrying Gov. Cuomo filled with smoke and required an emergency landing.
