Faced with budget cuts, the State of New Mexico has cut 50 vehicles from its fleet and turned off all GPS units in its fleet vehicles, reported the Albuquerque Journal.

The New Mexico General Services Department spent nearly $200,000 over the past three years to purchase GPS devices, which have helped recover three stolen vehicles and prevent blown engines in four instances. But a spokesperson told the Albuquerque Journal that turning the devices off has the potential to save $400,000 a year.

The state legislature is expected to meet this week and discuss whether to raise taxes to help the state cover its expenses.
