The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has extended a Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program to implement telematics in 1,200 fleet vehicles.

The VTS program was created to provide veterans with a transportation network that will ensure they get to healthcare appointments and receive the care they need. Many of the veterans utilizing the service are elderly, have visual impairments, or have been immobilized due to disease or disability and are living in remote and rural areas, which can make travel to the VA medical facilities very difficult.

About half of the vans and shuttle buses in the program have been equipped with a telematics solution from Kevadiya and ORBCOMM, which provides comprehensive routing, scheduling, and trip history. The solution uses ORBCOMM's cellular gateway and satellite modem to track and monitor these vehicles, and is connected to a Samsung tablet hosting the Kevadiya mobile fleet application.

Through this solution, ORBCOMM and Kevadiya provide the VTS dispatch team with visibility into the location and status of their vehicle fleet, while enabling efficient navigation, routing, driver management, and scheduling of patient pick-ups and drop-offs along with enhanced security.
