The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department (SCMPD) in Georgia may expand its take-home program, allowing more officers to take home their patrol cars, even if they live outside of Chatham County.

Currently, the department's policy allows officers with at least two years of experience to take home vehicles if they live within a 26-mile radius around the county. But Chief Jack Lumpkin told WTOC he believes expanding the radius would make the SCMPD more competitive and attract more officers.

He added that take-home cars would especially benefit low-paid officers. The additional visibility would also increase safety in neighborhoods around the county. Lumpkin has proposed the expansion to city officials.
