An Arizona congressman is proposing the state reduce its fleet by 20% and launch a pilot program where employees would use ride-hailing or rental car services for transportation, Fox 10 reported.
Arizona House Bill 2440, introduced by Representative Jeff Weninger this month, calls for a demo program to reduce 20% of the state’s motor vehicle fleet in fiscal years 2019 and 2020. This would be replaced by an increased use of transportation network companies (such as Uber or Lyft), vehicle for hire companies (such as taxis and limousines), fleet management companies, rental car companies, and other public-private partnerships, according to the bill. It calls for the Department of Administration to report on the results of the demonstration program in September 2019 and September 2020.
The bill targets about 13,000 fleet vehicles and excludes police cars, fire trucks, and construction equipment, Fox 10 reported.
If passed, Arizona wouldn’t be the first fleet to reduce its vehicles in favor of ride-hailing companies. The Wall Street Journal reported that in Brazil, Sao Paulo’s mayor got rid of the city’s fleet of 1,300 vehicles and told his staff to use Uber instead.
