Osceola County, Fla., is modernizing its fleet with four Pierce Impel Fire Engines and two Braun Rescue Ambulances, worth $2.46 million. This purchase is part of the county's efforts to standardize its fleet operation by purchasing vehicles with common parts.

The county plans to standardize its heavy- and medium-duty fleets by purchasing vehicles and equipment that use the same tires, filters, belts, and oil. With common parts, vehicles will be easier to maintain and the fleet will be able to lower its parts inventory.

Soon, Osceola County will purchase Kenworth T-880 dump trucks, and it will spec the vehicles to ensure they have the same engine, transmission, and tires as the new fire engines. Fleet Manager Hector Morales said the county will also purchase new medium-duty labor trucks that use the same engines and transmissions as the new ambulances.

Safety will also be emphasized with these purchases. Morales said Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS is working with his Department to install Vista Brake Lock safety devices in all of its fire engines, ladders, tower, and rescue ambulances.
