Sarasota County, Fla., plans to build a new maintenance and storage facility for the sheriff's fleet. The project would include 13 vehicle service bays, storage and office space, and a refueling station, and is estimated to cost $20.9 million, reports the Herald-Tribune.

The proposed facility's location is more central than the existing fleet facility, and would offer easier access to sheriff equipment, including bomb squad vehicles and armored SWAT trucks, in the event of an emergency. It would also provide more protection than the currently facility, where the agency's vehicles and equipment are kept uncovered.

County commissioners voted to rezone the land for government use at a recent meeting, and will vote on the fleet facility with its capital improvements plan in February.
