A former police chief for the City of Perth Amboy, N.J. is on trial for allegedly having city mechanics repair personal vehicles and engaging in witness tampering. The charges stem from three separate instances from late 2013 to early 2014, when then-chief Benjamin Ruiz allegedly instructed police department mechanics to work on his car as well as a friend's vehicle during business hours, according to NJ.com.

If convicted, Ruiz faces two charges of official misconduct theft of services, and witness tampering from a January 2015 incident in which Ruiz allegedly attempted to get a witness to lie to police during an investigation.
