The City of Prattville, Ala., City Council has voted to borrow $1.36 million to purchase sanitation equipment to replace the city’s aging garbage trucks, the Montgomery Advertiser reported. The city has a policy of paying cash for capital purchases, but the mayor said the fleet is in "such poor condition" that the city is spending too much money on repairs and downtime.

The city will purchase five Heil DuraPack 5000 rear loaders, two boom trucks, one automated side loader, and one dump insert through a National Joint Powers Alliance contract, according to city documents. The city will finance the equipment through a bank for a five-year term, and make monthly payments from the Sanitation Enterprise Fund.

The city expects to take delivery of the new trucks in about six months.
