Sales of cars, trucks, and SUVs to government fleets rose 17.7% in August compared to a year ago, as vehicle manufacturers continue to increase fleet market share through the first eight months of 2014, according to Automotive Fleet data.

Nine manufacturers not including Honda, which doesn't have a fleet sales unit, sold 3,343 more units than they did in August of 2013 for a 17.7% increase. Government fleet purchasing tilted a bit more toward car purchases, which increases 18.7% while trucks, SUVs, and vans increased 17.2%.

Government fleet sales remain on a growth trajectory in 2014. Through the first eight months of the year, the nine manufacturers have sold 170,802 government fleet vehicles compared to the 158,419 sold a year ago for a 7.8% increase (12,383 units) in the eight-month period. Commercial fleet sales rose 6.9% through August.

In August, sales to commercial fleet customers rose 21.1%. Overall fleet sales to commercial, government, and rental customers have risen 3.8% so far in 2014, as the manufacturers have sold 1.75 million fleet vehicles compared to 1.68 million through eight months of 2013.
