The New York Police Department has been towing public safety fleet vehicles, especially FBI cars, in the past few years, rather than allowing latitude for parking violations as it did in prior years.

The practice came to light in a New York Times story, which reported the more aggressive towing of federal vehicles, as well as illegally parked city police and fire vehicles.

In 2013, the NYPD's Vehicle Enforcement Unit towed 1,855 official vehicles, including 311 belonging to federal agencies, 361 NYPD vehicles, and 242 NYFD vehicles.
