Doug Whitacre was named public works director for the City of Topeka, Kan. in May 2013. Previously, Whitacre was director of public works/assistant city administrator for the City of McPherson, Kan., a position he held from November 2008 to May 2013.

Earlier, Whitacre was a long-time employee of Embarq/Sprint from 1987 to 2007, working in a variety of positions, one of which was fleet manager. While in this position, Whitacre managed a fleet of 9,500-plus commercial vehicles worth $250 million.
