A bid by San Diego's disgraced mayor to offer city ambulance service rather than allowing outsourced management by a private company has been shelved by the city's interim mayor.

Mayor Todd Gloria, who took over after former Mayor Bob Filner resigned Aug. 30 because of misconduct toward women, said there are too many questions to move forward with the plan to allow the city's Fire-Rescue Department to manage an ambulance fleet, reports U-T San Diego.

The city's firefighters union has been lobbying hard to take over management of ambulance services from Rural/Metro Corp., a private company that took over city ambulance service in 1997.

The issue has been a contentious one on the City Council, but Gloria now holds the swing vote.
