The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is evaluating almost two-dozen 2014 model-year police pursuit vehicles this week as part of the agency's annual testing.

Emergency operations drivers from the sheriff's department and Los Angeles Police Department test acceleration, braking, and high-speed handling on an interior track at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. A city pursuit course is also set up for Nov. 21 testing at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona.

The testing is the second round of police vehicle evaluations. In September, the Michigan State Police's Precision Driving Unit tested sedans, SUVs, and motorcycles for acceleration, top speed, braking, ergonomics, and high-speed handling.

Police testers use varying methods to reach similar results. For an in-depth look at the differences between the two, read "How to Use Police Vehicle Tests."

On Thursday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's testing of 21 pursuit vehicles will wind down. The agency is testing nine sedans, nine motorcycles, and three SUVs. Government Fleet will be attending the testing, so look for more in-depth coverage, photos, and video from the final day of testing.
