Alabama’s Governor Signs Bill to Improve State Fleet’s Efficiency

July 11, 2013

Alabama’s Governor Robert Bentley has signed Senate Bill 57, which authorizes the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to review State agency fleets in order to develop a program to save money and improve fleet operational efficiency. The Governor’s office expects the assessment to be complete by Sept. 30 of this year. ALDOT will use the information from the assessment to develop the fleet management plan.

“This is a continuation of our efforts to make government more efficient and save money for taxpayers,” Governor Bentley said. “The goal of this program is to find the lowest possible cost per mile driven on our state-owned vehicles. A fleet management program is one of the recommendations made by the Commission on Improving State Government, which I established to help us reduce government costs and operate more efficiently. I am proud to sign this legislation that helps us accomplish this goal.”

The Governor’s office noted that Alabama operates approximately 8,800 State-owned vehicles but that there is not currently a uniform program for managing those vehicles through different State agencies and departments. SB 57 makes ALDOT the primary department responsible for managing the State’s fleet. This bill also complements an executive order signed by Bentley in March.

I would like to report an erratic and dangerous driver. On 10/1/13 at ~4pm a State owned white Ford Explorer 2012 or possible 2013 with the tag# S3628A heading West of Athens Alabama on HBy 72 was in the left lane going~40mph in a 50mph zone. The driver was on the phone. Looked like a women driver with a older male passenger. This same vehicle passed me in Rogersville, Alabama doing 65 mph in a 45 mph zone. Caught up with this vehicle at the only red light in Rogersville and watched it tailgate another vehicle out of town heading west.
