GFX 2013: ‘The Rookie’ Tells Attendees to Follow Their Dreams

Jim Morris, keynote speaker for GFX on Tuesday, June 11, inspired conference attendees during his speech on following dreams. Morris, whose life story was made into a movie, “The Rookie,” talked about giving up his dream of becoming a baseball player and starting again (and succeeding) when he was in his 30s.
He went through life with “dreamkillers,” or those who prevented him from achieving his dreams. “Dreamkillers come in all shapes and forms. Know who’s around you,” he said.
He also spoke about “dreammakers,” or the people who inspired and encouraged him to follow his dreams. In Morris’s case, it was his grandparents, who he lived with during his teenage years.
He recommended the audience surround themselves with good people, and to get the dreamkillers out of the way. Finally, he told the audience what his grandfather taught him, to “remember who you are.” He said people should always do their best, and not do anything they wouldn’t be proud of or want to hide.
Morris added that one of the most important lessons he learned as a youth baseball coach was teamwork.
“It’s about teamwork. It’s about doing what you’re supposed to do and helping others do it,” Morris said.
AssetWorks sponsored the keynote address. Joe Keefe of AssetWorks introduced Morris.
