WASHINGTON TWP, NJ — The Washington Township Police Department is preparing 22 out-of-commission vehicles to go up for sale on the online auction site, eBay, according to the Gloucester County Times.

According to the report, the cars range between eight and 12 years old and will have their emblems painted over. Additional changes include removing the partitions, overhead lights, police radios, and sirens.

This is the first time the department has turned to eBay to auction off out-of-use vehicles, according to Chief of Police Rafael Muniz, who said that  by expanding the department’s audience, it can maximize the revenue. “Many departments throughout the country use eBay so we decided to try it out,” Muniz said.

The Department recently sold its first vehicle in a test run. It was a five-year-old car seized by the department drew in about $15,000, according to the Times.

The cars will go up for sale within the next few weeks, and Muniz said he expects to pull in anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 per car.

According to the Times, Muniz is hoping the proceeds will bring in enough money to fund new vehicles or equipment.

“Our SUVs, Ford Explorers, are about 12 years old and have some rusting issues with the frames. We want to start replacing them and hopefully this year, we can.”
