DELAND, FL – Volusia County is using two new “utility task vehicles” (UTVs) for its Beach Patrol officers instead of the pickup trucks it used previously. The vehicles are Ranger UTVs manufactured by Polaris.

In addition, the County plans to purchase at least eight more in 2012. Each Ranger UTV costs $15,000, fully outfitted, according to a news release from the County, and is larger than an all-terrain vehicle but smaller than a truck. The UTV also has space for a back board and a surf board.

The County’s Public Protection Deputy Director Joseph Pozzo said the UTV offers drivers using each vehicle improved visibility and versatility in crowded areas.
