WASHINGTON – Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) proposed an amendment that requires the mandatory use of alternative-fuel vehicles by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and related agencies. This amendment was adopted as part of 2012 fiscal-year Energy and Water Appropriations bill, according to a news release from the congressman.

The Government Services Administration (GSA) counts over 660,000 vehicles in the entire federal fleet. The news release said that approximately 15,000 vehicles would be subject to this amendment.  Although this amendment affects 15,000 vehicles used by the DOE, combined with Engel’s other fleet-related amendments, a total of 312,000 vehicles would be subject to Rep. Engel’s amendments.

This amendment formally codifies part of the Presidential Memorandum on Federal Fleet Performance issued by President Barack Obama.  The President’s Memorandum would require all new light-duty vehicles in the federal fleet to be alternate fuel vehicles, such as hybrid, electric, natural gas, or biofuel, by December 31, 2015.
