SAN BERNARDINO, CA – San Bernardino’s Fleet Management Division purchased new CNG and LNG vehicles during this budget cycle in its effort to further green the fleet. New vehicles purchased include two new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) power street sweepers, one new CNG powered storm drain/sewer cleaning truck, seven Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered automated side loader refuse trucks, two LNG-powered front loaders, and one LNG powered roll off bin truck.

Other alternative-fuel vehicles in the fleet include three medium duty dedicated propane-powered Vehicles, six bi-fuel (propane/gasoline) light duty vehicles, 21 dedicated CNG vehicles (light, medium, and heavy duty), and 57 dedicated LNG heavy duty vehicles.

The City also has a natural gas fueling station that’s open to the public 24 hours a day. Currently the public can purchase CNG. Other public-sector fleets will soon be able to purchase LNG that can provide proof of safety training related to safely fueling LNG-fueled vehicles. For more information concerning natural gas fuel availability, contact the Fleet Office at (909) 384-5220.

In addition to its efforts to go green, the City’s Fleet Management Division become one of only 33 other municipalities in the State of California to meet the requirements in being an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Blue Seal of Excellence shop in April. Only a total of 198 municipalities nationally have earned this distinction. Overall, there are 150 Blue Seal Recognized Businesses (retail repair facilities) in California with 1,500 nationally.

San Bernardino currently has 16 ASE-certified technicians. Of those, 10 are certified Master Technicians, and five are double-certified Master Technicians, all of whom have a combined number of certifications totaling 170. According to Fleet Management, that number is rising and there were several technicians registered to test in May of 2011.
