FITCHBURG, MA - The Fitchburg Fire Department has been awarded several grants to help its fleet and staff remain intact, according to the Fitchburg Pride. The City suffered from a drastic $2 million cut to State Aid in 2009.

The fire department was awarded a $511,000 grant to hire eight new firefighters and maintain those positions for at least two more years.

"It will keep our staff and all three stations up," said Fire Chief Kevin Roy, reported the Pride. "It's a real morale booster for the department."

A $600,000 Federal Assistance to Firefighters grant will also allow the department to be able to maintain its vehicle fleet and update its communication systems, according to the Pride.
