GADSDEN, AL -Gadsden's Fleet Management Department plans to kick off next month its "Waste to Fuel" used cooking oil recycling program, where cooking oil from residents and restaurants will be converted to fuel that will be used to power some of the department's vehicles, according to The Gadsden Times.

The fuel produced is considerably cheaper than the diesel fuel now used by the vehicles, city officials said. Officials hope the program also will cure some of the problems the Gadsden Water Works and Sewer Board has by encouraging recycling oil and grease rather than pouring them down drains. The city will spend about 70 cents a gallon to produce diesel fuel instead of $2.75 a gallon for diesel fuel.

The city was given the equipment, which cost about $14,000, as part of a program sponsored by Auburn University to encourage the use of biofuels.
