Sarasota County Adds a Biodiesel Blend to Fleet Vehicles

August 8, 2007

CHARLOTTE, NC – Sarasota County has switched to B-5, a blend of petroleum diesel and five-percent biofuel made from soybeans, according to the Charlotte Sun-Herald.

Automotive Resources Fleet Manager Greg Morris said the move will reduce fossil fuel dependency by an estimated 50,000 gallons each year.

According to Morris, Sarasota County uses nearly 1 million gallons of diesel fuel annually, in addition to the gasoline that fuels its other fleet vehicles and equipment. More than 580 diesel-powered assets are fueled at or from the three fuel sites managed by the county’s Automotive Resources team. Morris expects a minimal change in the county’s cost to move to biofuel, up to two cents more per gallon.

Morris said the new fuel will result in cleaner, more environmentally friendly exhaust, according to the report.
