AUBURN, GA – Auburn police cars are getting a new look and new digital cameras, paid for by traffic violators, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. The Statham Police Department will purchase five of the old cameras for $1 each.

Auburn police added a $10 technology fee to their traffic citations Oct. 1 to carry the $51,000 cost of the cameras. Since then, the fee has contributed between $400 to $2,000 each month toward the cameras. The new Digital Ally cameras will save space in the police car and storage area at headquarters, according to Chief Fred Brown.

Using GPS technology, the police officer can have the camera mark an exact location with the touch of a button. For example, if something is tossed from a car, officers can return to its location and possibly locate the item.

In other news, Auburn police cars are getting a new look. Any 2002 Ford Crown Victoria prowlers with more than 100,000 miles are being replaced with 2007 Chevrolet Impalas that will feature a new logo. The new graphic features a streamlined identifier in shades of blue and gray with the Auburn police badge and “Community Commitment” written on the door. The graphics are included in the approximately $20,100 cost of each car.
