LIMA, PERU – Peruvian Interior Minister Pilar Mazzetti has resigned after being questioned for the purchase of police cars, according to the Web site www.allheadlinenews.com. Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo confirmed that President Alan Garcia has accepted her resignation.
Lawmakers from the opposition and President’s center-left Aprista party accused her ministry for overpaying in a police car purchase. They accused Mazzetti of failing to obtain a discount for the fleet of 469 patrol cars for the national police.
Another ongoing investigation centers on substandard ambulances she purchased when she was the health minister under former President Alejandro Toledo.
