IRVINE, CA – To meet the demands of escalating insurance costs and potentially higher liability rates, UC Irvine Extension is offering a new course, “Motor Fleet Safety for the Safety and Health Professional,” that explores how to develop safety practices and procedures for motor fleet departments. The one-day class will be held on Sat., Feb. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the UCI Learning Center in Orange, Calif.

“Motor fleet managers are responsible for large numbers of vehicles as well numerous drivers,” said Astra Townley, MS, ARM, CSP, WFF-Technical Consultant, Liberty Mutual – National Market and course instructor at UC Irvine Extension. “Not to mention making sure all insurance and liability procedures are up-to-date. This course will equip participants with the skills to better oversee and manage all facets of their job.”

The course will include lectures, case studies, training videos, and a question and answer session with a motor fleet safety professional. Topics that will be covered include:

  • Overview and definition of a motor fleet safety program.
  • The elements of a successful fleet safety program.
  • How to develop safety practices and procedures that will reduce company losses.
  • Creating a plan that complies with OSHA guidelines.
  • Organization of motor vehicle fleet accident data and how to conduct accident investigations.
  • Knowledge of selection, hiring and training of drivers.

    Also, “How to Effectively Supervise a Scattered Fleet” is offered within UC Irvine Extension’s Occupational Safety and Health Certificate Program.
