LEXINGTON, KY – Lexington Mayor Teresa Isaac has been driving around a city-owned car sporting a political bumper sticker on the rear windshield that says, ‘Firefighters support Isaac for Mayor.’ The car — a 2003, two-door, red Oldsmobile Alero — is paid for and maintained by the City, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

A section of the city’s Ethics Act regarding the use of public property, equipment, and personnel says “no officer or employee shall use or permit the use of any public time, funds, personnel, equipment, or other personal or real property for the private use of any person or political party.”

While some say that Isaac is violating the Ethics Act, a spokesman for Isaac said the political sticker on her city-assigned car isn’t a violation of the Ethics Act because a separate, 2003 policy written by the chief administrative officer states that the city will provide the mayor with a vehicle for personal and business use. According to the report, the spokesman also said that the Ethics Act includes a provision that allows city officers and employees to use government property for personal use as long as there is a stated government policy allowing that use.

Isaac’s vehicle also sports a Rock the Vote sticker, International Association of Fire Fighters sticker, and a yellow ribbon sticker.
