Researchers Say Soybean-Based Biofuel Is the Best Choice

July 26, 2006

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – According to researchers at the University of Minnesota, soybean-based fuel blends are a superior choice to biofuel sourced from corn, CanWest News reports. Soybean biodiesel could possibly provide cleaner emissions for the environment, emitting less nitrogen, less phosphorus into the air, and depositing fewer pesticides into drinking water supplies during crop production. CanWest News also reports that soy biodiesel nets 93 percent more energy than what’s necessary to produce it. A corn-based fuel nets only 23 percent more energy. However, researchers say that neither soybeans nor corn should be the foundation of an alternative-fuel industry because turning food into fuel would hurt the supply of food in the near future.
