WICHITA, KS – Troubled by its management culture and slow-paced repair work, the city of Wichita may turn over its fleet maintenance division to an Ohio company, according to the Wichita Eagle newspaper. The division, which repairs city vehicles and other mechanical equipment, has about 60 employees. Under a proposal from First Vehicle Services, those workers would retain their jobs for at least one year and have comparable pay and benefits. After that year, however, some jobs could be eliminated if First Vehicle can provide adequate service with fewer people, the city’s director of public works, Chris Carrier said. The Wichita City Council will meet with representatives from First Vehicle to discuss the proposal. The proposed outsourcing of management comes after what Carrier described as more than a year of problems with the division’s managers, which include poor customer service and poor relationships that lead to a negative working environment, according to the Wichita Eagle.
