MONTGOMERY, AL – Terry Gaddis, director of the fleet management department, wants the City of Montgomery to purchase a $126,000 car wash to replace a 1997 touchless automatic unit that washes 5,000 cars and trucks monthly, according to a June 22 article in the Montgomery Advertiser. The city’s current carwash, purchased in 1997 for $87,507 and refurbished for $20,000 in 2002, requires hours of maintenance every week and needs repairs almost daily. According to the article, the city did not have an estimate of the amount of water used in the carwash, although Gaddis told the paper it requires about $500 in soap a month. The city is not considering a fleet account with a Montgomery carwash business, and according to the newspaper, the city council feels Gaddis has justified the expense of the carwash.
