BUFFALO, NY – Some Erie County employees who lost their county take-home vehicle last year are once again driving county cars, according to a WQRZ-TV report. The increase in county take-home vehicles from 25 to 33 comes after the county cut the use of take-home vehicles in Feb. 2005 from 43 to 26 due to a budget crisis. All but two of the take-home vehicles are trucks or SUVs.
The move to reissue take-home vehicles was made because using county-owned vehicles and tax-free gas was cheaper than mile reimbursement, according to the report. The county also said that it wasn’t practical for employees who are on call 24 hours a day to be without their own county-issued car.
