HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Highland Park Public Works Department has completed a six-month comparison of fuel costs for 21 Toyota Priuses they bought earlier this year, according to the Highland Park News. The comparison shows that the city has saved $9,944 on fuel using the Toyota Prius vehicles versus driving Ford Crown Victorias, the other large pool of vehicles the city uses for its police department. The Priuses are powered by electricity and gasoline, depending on the type of demand made on the engine. After 64,416 miles of use, the Toyotas were getting 41 miles per gallon versus the Crown Victorias at 10.3 mpg. The Toyotas used 1,571 gallons of gasoline and the Fords used 6,422 gallons. With an average price of $2.05 per gallon (from April through September), the cost savings on the 4,851 gallons of saved fuel was $9,944.
