FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO — Franklin County Commissioners have approved legislation that will add a number of vehicles to its clean-fuel fleet, according to www.thisweeknews.com/forum. Grant funding will add four vans that use natural gas and 10 to 12 flexible-fuel vehicles that use a blend of ethanol and gasoline.
The county already has 61 vehicles that can use E-85 fuel, a mixture of 85 percent ethanol, or grain alcohol, and 15 percent gasoline. Most of those are Ford Taurus models, but the new cars could be a variety of makes and models.
Right now, E-85 is about 20 cents a gallon cheaper then gasoline, but the real savings come from natural gas vehicles, which have fuel costs of about $1.40 a gallon, according to the www.thisweeknews.com report.
Fleet Management will work with the Department of Animal Control to convert four new vans to have the capability to operate on either natural gas or gasoline next year. The grant requires the county to convert four vans to bi-fuel in 2005. In 2006, four more are planned for conversion to bi-fuel.
