DeKalb County's Fleet Fuel Bill Spikes by 71%

September 28, 2005

DEKALB COUNTY, IL — DeKalb County expects to spend nearly 71 percent more for regular and diesel gasoline this fiscal year than the $188,000 it had budgeted, according to the Daily Inquirer. DeKalb City Manager Mark Biernacki said the city set aside about $220,000 for gas in its FY2006 budget, but expects to exceed that amount by about 20 percent if the current trend continues.DeKalb most recently paid between $2.40 and $2.50 per gallon for gas, Biernacki said, but paid only $1.99 one or two months ago. The county paid $2.02 per gallon for a shipment in mid-August, but by the end of the month that price was up to $2.73.Biernacki said the city is looking at having the police department increase its use of bike, motorcycle, and walking patrols, or having two officers per vehicle during slow shifts — all in an effort to reduce fuel use.
