MONTGOMERY, AL — Local counties have enacted emergency plans to deal with a shortage of gas and keep sheriff’s deputies on the road, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. Elmore County declared a state of emergency Thursday to comply with the state bid law and allow county vehicles to begin filling up at gas stations. Montgomery County will limit nonessential travel to stretch the gas supply for law enforcement, according to Alicia Morris, public information officer for the county. Morris said the Sheriff’s Of-fice has about a 6,500 gallons of gas — a 13-day supply. According to the Montgomery Advertiser report, Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall said he has restricted the use of vehicles for part-time jobs and is canceling the vehicle take-home program until the gas situation is resolved. Marshall said the vehicles would be parked at the county parking garage when they are not in official use. The Montgomery County engineering department has about 9,500 gallons of diesel fuel and 6,000 gallons of regular gas. Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright said earlier this week that he instructed the city’s fleet manager to fill up all city tanks and reserves and to keep those full.
