SALT LAKE CITY – Van Turner, Salt Lake City councilman, wants to move the city's fleet facility, to open space for housing, retail or other commercial uses, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. The move will cost the city at least $3.2 million more to move the facility than to renovate it. The 8-acre plant provides maintenance for 2,700 city vehicles. The facility suffers from more than 30 problems, including faulty ventilation forcing employees to breathe engine fumes and poor layout with no space for larger equipment. To renovate, it will cost the city $11.2 million. To build a new one, it would cost $14.4 million to $16.4 million, in addition to the cost of buying the land. The city has spent $70,000 on renovation work. Some problems are expected to remain even after a remodel.
