FRANKFORT, KY – Drivers of thousands of state-owned passenger vehicles are to have those vehicles counted and inspected as part of a state government attempt at more effectively managing its fleet, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. After the inventory is complete, the vehicles will be the responsibility of the state Transportation Cabinet's division of fleet management, instead of several state agencies. There are 9,909 vehicles in the state fleet, of which 2,880 are state police and public university vehicles exempt from the inventory. A majority of state vehicles have been under the control of the division of fleet management. After the inventory, all state-owned passenger vehicles will move to fleet management control. According to state officials, putting the vehicles under one agency will provide more leverage when the state negotiates on the cost of other vehicles.
