SAN DIEGO – The San Diego City Council is considering whether to award a contract to purchase BMW motorcycles to replace the San Diego Police Department's fleet, according to the San Diego News Service. The department would like to buy 55 motorcycles at a cost of about $1.1 million. The money will come from an unlicensed-driver vehicle impound fee. Each motorcycle costs $19,531. According to a city manager's report, the average life of a police motorcycle is six years or 60,000 miles. The current fleet of 72 motorcycles now averages 56,346 miles. The proposal for the new motorcycles was unanimously approved by the City Council's Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee in March 2005.
