Panel for State of Maine Votes Against Biodiesel Fuel Bill

April 13, 2005

AUGUSTA, ME – A bill that would have required state government agencies to use biodiesel fuel instead of gasoline to reduce dependence on fossil fuels was voted against unanimously by members of the Legislature's State and Local Government Committee, according to the Bangor Daily News.Supporters of LD 197 argued that biodiesel fuel is a clean-burning alternative to fossil fuels and is produced from renewable resources. The critics of the bill said there would be supply and delivery problems with biodiesel and that the bill contained no incentives for the local production of the fuel. Analysts estimated that the bill would cost the state of Maine nearly $1.1 million more in fuel costs if adopted as proposed.
